Insight, focus and progress: how to really set strategy in motion as a Portfolio Manager

Emy Piers
Director of the Programme Management Office

Making the Nederlandse Loterij strategy a reality, resolving bottlenecks, making progress visible and ensuring that initiatives reinforce each other. That is where you make a difference as a Portfolio Manager. In this blog, Director of the Programme Management Office Emy Piers explains how you contribute to achieving the Nederlandse Loterij goals in this role.

Implementing strategy with an eye on the big picture

Within Nederlandse Loterij, various teams work on strategic initiatives that together shape the organisation’s course. As a Portfolio Manager, you are responsible for the progress of the corporate roadmap. You ensure that dependencies are clear, so that strategic initiatives grow into concrete results.

‘Whereas a programme manager delves deeply into a single topic, as a Portfolio Manager you look at the big picture,’ explains Emy. ‘You bring focus, resolve bottlenecks and translate strategic choices into clear priorities. In doing so, you contribute to strengthening the organisation. And that is exactly what we need in a rapidly changing environment.’

An analytical connector

The Portfolio Manager has an eye for figures and people. ‘You collect data and translate it into information that helps managers and teams,’ says Emy. “That requires analytical skills, but also a feel for the dynamics of decision-making. You work together with programme managers, strategic counterparts and stakeholders in the business. In doing so, you help to substantiate choices with facts, analyses and scenarios. It is important to be able to switch effortlessly between operational, tactical and strategic levels.”

She emphasises that cooperation within the PMO team is crucial in this regard. ‘Our team consists of six programme managers, a portfolio manager and myself. We all have our own roles, but we work as a whole. We proactively help each other, share knowledge and work towards common goals. That makes the PMO at Nederlandse Loterij a close-knit and professional team.’

“With a small group we make a difference and add value by working on complex issues and implementing strategic initiatives”

Building the PMO Centre of Excellence

In addition to your daily tasks, as a Portfolio Manager you play an important role in the further development of the PMO. ‘We are in the process of building a PMO Centre of Excellence,’ explains Emy. ‘This means that we are constantly improving processes, frameworks and standards and making them available to colleagues. The Portfolio Manager plays a pioneering role in this: you provide structure, contribute ideas about development and maintain contact with stakeholders.’

“A small department with a big impact”

Ellen Kerssens, one of the programme managers: “What I find special about our team is that we are a relatively small group of professionals who are making a real impact. We work on complex issues that affect both the organisation and the market. Puck Schiffers, also a member of the PMO team, adds: ‘And we do so in a culture where cooperation and trust are central. Everyone contributes their own knowledge and experience, we help each other move forward – that way, together we ensure results and enjoyment in what we do.’

Impact on sporting Netherlands

What makes the role at Nederlandse Loterij so special? “Nederlandse Loterij is the most reliable gaming organisation in the Netherlands. We make an impact by protecting consumers from gambling addiction and combating crime. We stand for responsible, fair and safe gaming, and our programmes and projects contribute to a happy, healthy and sporty Netherlands,‘ says Emy. ’Whether it’s responsible gaming, digital innovation or collaboration with sports organisations, our mission is reflected in everything we do. As a Portfolio Manager, you help make that mission a reality.”

Emy concludes: ‘We are looking for someone who gets energy from bringing structure and collaboration at both the operational and strategic levels. Someone who brings order to complexity and helps the organisation grow further. If you like to maintain an overview and bring movement at the same time, then you are a perfect fit for our team.’
