Finding your passion can be a challenge, but for Kasper Koers, an IT trainee at Nederlandse Loterij, the adventure began during his sports management studies. After his first introduction to software testing and a training as a full-stack developer, he made the leap to IT trainee at Nederlandse Loterij, where he found his perfect job. What makes it so special? Find out in Kasper’s story.
Kasper thoroughly enjoys his time at Nederlandse Loterij, and for good reason. The focus on sports, the pleasant working atmosphere, the beautiful office and the fun outings make every working day memorable. “The IT traineeship and software testing appealed to me immediately, but it was the organisation that won me over”, he says. “As a sports fan, I really appreciate all that the Nederlandse Loterij does for the sports world. Almost all of the organisation’s proceeds go to charities and sports organisations. We are also proud to be the main sponsor of TeamNL. Employees are also well looked after; we can attend sporting events, and a trip to the Paris Olympics is planned.”
What will await you in the first weeks of your IT traineeship at Nederlandse Loterij? He explains: “During the onboarding, you will learn a lot about the company, the various gaming brands such as Staatsloterij and TOTO, and the technologies we use. With a buddy, you draw up a personal plan for the next 6 to 12 months. What do you want to focus on, and what do you want to achieve?”
“The IT traineeship lasts two years. During this time I work in different teams as a software tester. I started in the casino team, working on projects for TOTO. Then I moved to the portal team, which is responsible for user registration and wallet functionality. We are a close-knit team of 10 people, consisting of testers, developers, and designers. We test the applications thoroughly, the developers build the solutions, and the designers take care of the design.”
“When I look back on my development over the past four months, I realise how much I have learnt as a software tester”, shares Kasper. “I started with minimal experience, but I have gained broad knowledge through different tasks, like testing website updates, data processing and new game concepts. My next goal is to learn how to write automated tests, for which I will be attending a course soon.”
“I also get extensive support to help me grow”, he says enthusiastically. “Not only external courses are available, but also training courses through the NLO Academy and personal guidance from my buddy and manager. I am attending the ISTQB Foundation course, where I am learning about testing methods, test writing, and the latest technologies. I am about to start a Robot Framework course, to learn how to write automated tests. I review my progress weekly with my buddy, and monthly with my manager so that we can work together to optimise my development.”
Kasper is excited about his IT traineeship at Nederlandse Loterij, and surprised by what he gains in addition to his job. “The many extras surprised me”, he says. “Fun team outings and free access to the gym. At Nederlandse Loterij, there is a perfect balance between working hard and having fun.”
