At Nederlandse Loterij, quite a few marketing awards are bagged every year. From an Effie to a ‘Gouden Loeki’ (Gold Loeki). But were you aware that Nederlandse Loterij can now also declare itself as the winner of the ‘World-class Workplace Award 2022-2023’ in the Financial Services category? An outstanding award for good employment practices. We got together with HR manager Wouter van Tilburg to discuss appreciation, attractive employment benefits and creating a stimulating working environment.

On the subject of the ‘World-class Workplace’ Award

What exactly is this award all about? Wouter explains: “World-class Workplace is a quality mark set by research agency Effectory. This quality mark is 100% based on employees’ opinions and is awarded to organisations that score above the benchmark for good employment practices.

The survey consists of five questions that are evaluated. Four questions come under the theme of ‘good employment practices’; to what extent does the organisation have an inspiring vision for the future, is there room for bottom-up innovation, what is the overall satisfaction with the organisation and to what extent do employees feel the organisation appreciates them. The fifth question targets the Net Promoter Score (NPS); how likely are you to recommend your organisation to others? Naturally, I’m proud of the fact that our employees value the organisation so much that we ended up top in our category.”

Appreciation within Nederlandse Loterij

The strikingly high score in the section ‘the organisation values employees’ was one of the reasons why Nederlandse Loterij won this award. We asked Wouter what appreciation within the organisation means. “At Nederlandse Loterij, we believe in the importance of self-reliance and self-responsibility. Our multidisciplinary way of working together aims to stimulate these qualities within the organisation and increase the scope for initiative.”

“Appreciation manifests itself, among other things, in the way we interact with one other. We listen to each other and treat one another with respect. We’re transparent and share a lot of information with each other. We believe in the importance of self-reliance and self-responsibility. Our multidisciplinary way of working together aims to stimulate these qualities within the organisation and increase the scope for initiative. But appreciation, of course, also involves offering attractive employment benefits and this is more than just a good salary. Employees can use our gym with personal trainers every day for free, they can create their own healthy (vegetarian) lunch for €3,- and they have an annual personal training budget of €2.000,-. What’s more, the events, parties and meet-ups we organise form an important basis for creating connection in the organisation,” Wouter says.

“Naturally, I'm proud of the fact that our employees value the organisation so much that we ended up top in our category.”

What is the next step for the best employer?

Winning such an award is wonderful, but what’s next in terms of good employment practices at Nederlandse Loterij? Wouter says: “We’re paying increasing attention to technology and data within the organisation. This means we’re asking different things of our employees and of new employees. It’s up to us to support them properly in this process. Of course, it’s also important to maintain what’s already so appreciated. And we’re doing our level best in that regard.”

Employer tip

We round off our conversation with a final tip from Wouter about good employment practices. This is what he has to say: “Good employment practices go beyond working conditions on their own. It involves developing employees, giving them responsibility and creating a pleasant and stimulating working environment. Because, in the end, if you want to win you have to be able to work well with each other.”
