Using data to make an impact at all levels of the organisation

Jennifer Vink
Product Owner

Enabling teams to make data-driven decisions, developing new features and ideas, and, of course, prioritising the many ongoing data projects within Nederlandse Loterij. Just a small part of what Product Owner Jennifer Vink does. And she does so in an organisation where data is thriving and in high demand. Are you curious about what it means to work in the data warehouse team at Nederlandse Loterij? Read all about it here.

Preparing data for the business

Four data teams, each consisting of Data Engineers, a Tester, a Data Analyst, and a Product Owner, make up the Data Management department at Nederlandse Loterij. Where the other Data Management teams deal with streaming near real-time data and preparing data for de Belastingdienst and Kansspelautoriteit, Jennifer and her teammates focus on preparing data for the business. “As a Product Owner, I talk to various parties within Nederlandse Loterij. For example, I understand where our Marketing or Business Intelligence teams want to go with their departments. My team and I then translate their ideas into ways to support them by providing the right data.”

The future is data

Influencing the future of Nederlandse Loterij as a company: this is what it means to be part of the Data Management team. “The future is data-driven. We guide teams to make data-driven decisions.” To excel in this job, having in-depth knowledge of data is not enough. “As a Product Owner, it is important that I can clearly explain to my colleagues why the delivery of a project has a longer lead time, or why we need to prioritise another project. Having worked as a Data Analyst myself makes my job easier. When I receive a request, I immediately understand the technical aspects of the question. That makes a substantial difference.”

“We are constantly trying out innovative technologies and learning both through training and from each other. There is a huge amount of knowledge going around in our department.”

Twenty types of data sources

One of the biggest challenges Jennifer faces in her team? As a Product Owner, she stresses the importance of collecting near real-time data. “We have about twenty types of data sources. Think CRM, transactional data and lottery draw data, from which we can extract all the ticket information. That means bringing in twenty systems and transforming them before making the data available to the various departments. That’s a lot of processes going on simultaneously, especially when you have to do it several times a day.” Another challenge is the amount of data that the data warehouse has to manage. “We’re talking about terabytes of data that we have to process in one way or another. What’s the best way to deal with that while making sure that our system doesn’t go down?”

Room to grow

What makes Nederlandse Loterij such a good employer, according to Jennifer? “The organisation has an open, approachable culture and gives you space to learn. Do you have a good idea? Then, you’ll have the opportunity to build a proof of concept. You can also attend all kinds of training courses to grow as a data professional. We are constantly trying out innovative technologies and learning both through training and from each other. There is a huge amount of knowledge going around in our department.”
